Water Heater Stress

Does your water heater make unusual noises, like squealing, crackling or popping?  This can be a sign of wear and deterioration.
The winter months are particularly rough on water heaters because they have to bring water up to the set temperature starting from a lower temperature.  Water coming in to the water heater is much colder in the winter, so water heaters are working harder this time of year to keep the temperature that you want.

So how do you know if it is time to replace a water heater?

Here are some signs that would indicate it is time for replacement:

  • Water is slowly leaking from the bottom of the tank.
  • The water heater has a hard time keeping up with demand. Not enough hot water.
  • Excessive noise when the water heater is heating.

Water heaters usually last 10 to 15 years.  If your water heater is older than 15 years, replacing it can be a good preventative measure.  You can find the manufacture date on the labels of most water heaters.
